Winter is coming. While all you Game of Thrones fans may chuckle at that reference, Winter conditions in New England are not to be trifled with. We are well past the hot summer days and November is just around the corner. Once the calendar turns to November, snow, and hail is not too far behind. So before the crazy cold and snowy weather hits, here are some tips the get your house ready for an unpredictable Winter.

-Dress appropriately and in layers. It is not summer anymore.

-Double check and make sure none of your furniture is impeding and interfering with your heating systems or heating vents.

-Make sure to check and clean your gutters

During the winter time, power outages are pretty common amongst home owners. Planning ahead for power outages is critical because it can make one's life a whole lot easier and mitigate the situation. Plan ahead and stock up on winter essentials in case power is lost in your home. Always make sure you have a Big, durable shovel somewhere in your home and have salt to melt ice stored in a safe place. Stock up on cases of water and Meals that are ready to eat known as MREs.

September National Preparedness Takeaways

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

September is coming to a close but it is important to remember why every September is National Preparedness month. Hurricanes, storms, power outages and fires of severe magnitudes can occur at anytime so it is imperative to always have a plan for safety.

Just a month ago we saw Hurricane Dorian devastate areas near southern Florida. Hurricane Dorian was one of the most potent storms on record with wind speeds over 180 miles per hour. While no human being is capable of stopping or slowing down a Catergory five hurricane like Dorian, humans are capable of planning safe evacuation routes and meeting points.

Hurricane Dorian serves as a reminder that it is a good idea to plan for emergencies with your family members and pets. Do not leave your pets behind during emergencies unless you have no other choice.

Here are some good takeaways everyone should remember going forward even as September ends.

-Always have a portable first aid kit in your residence filled with adequate supplies.

- Pay attention to the news and stay up to date with current events

-Prepare Emergency Ready to go bags for each person in your family

-Practice an evacuation plan with your family members and in addition to that have a designated meeting spot in case of an emergency.

-Always have a couple of cases of bottled water and quick, ready to made meals waiting in your garage

National Preparedness Month is dedicated towards helping, promoting, and making people aware that they need to be ready for emergency situations. Everyone needs to be educated on what to do and how to act during emergency situations because that can be the key to survival.

Disasters can happen and it is better to be safe than sorry when emergencies strikes. Make a plan and practice with your family. Prepare now and learn how at

Lisa's Chili

Office Administrator, Lisa Daiute grew up eating this savory Chili made by her favorite uncle David. Throughout the years she has continued this delicious tradition in her own home, making it for her roommates and family.

The Perfect Chili Recipe

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • One 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup masa harina (corn flour, found in the Mexican food section of many supermarkets)
  • One 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • One 15-ounce can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • Shredded Cheddar, for serving
  • Chopped onions, for serving
  • Tortilla chips, for serving
  • Lime wedges, for serving

Place the ground beef in a large pot and throw in the garlic. Cook over medium heat until browned. Drain off the excess fat, and then pour in the tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt and cayenne. Stir together well, cover, and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. If the mixture becomes overly dry, add 1/2 cup water at a time as needed.

After an hour, place the masa harina in a small bowl. Add 1/2 cup water and stir together with a fork. Dump the masa mixture into the chili. Stir together well, and then taste and adjust the seasonings. Add more masa paste and /or water to get the chili to your preferred consistency, or to add more corn flavor. Add the beans and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with shredded Cheddar, chopped onions, tortilla chips and lime wedges.
